Each appointment lasts about one hour. The first appointment will involve taking a full medical history. The assessment of the underlying cause of your condition, involves consideration of your current symptoms, together with tongue and pulse diagnosis. This then gives a picture of your energetic imbalances and acupuncture points are chosen to correct these. I generally use 2-3 needles per treatment. These are very fine single use, stainless steel needles. The insertion of the needles is usually not felt and is certainly not painful. The needles release messages from the acupuncture points into the body. They remain in situ for up to 20 minutes, or until a change in quality is felt on the pulse. I usually see patients weekly for the first 2-3 treatments and these then start to be spaced out to fortnightly or monthly visits, as the treatment progresses.

YIN:...The cooling, nourishing aspects of the body.
YANG: ..The warming, moving aspects of the body.
QI: ..Life force-the energy that makes you alive and vital.
The Qi of the body links and interacts with the Yin and Yang aspects of the body.

Acupuncture seeks to balance the Yin and Yang aspects of the body, by engaging the QI that flows within the meridian system.

Imagine a system of und erground pipes. If they become blocked, nothing flows, debris starts to accumulate and rot. A person goes down the manhole to free the blockage. The opposite may also occur when the pipes are empty, drained and depleted. Winds howl down the pipes causing disturbances. The meridian system of the body can be likened to the pipes, the manhole to the Acupuncture points and the person to the needles. Acupuncture needles are very fine, like a strand of hair and are used to flood the body with the information stored within the points along the various meridians.

The health of the meridians and the organs to which they are connected is assessed by;

a) Taking a full medical history.

b) Observing the shape, colour and cracks of the tongue.

c) Palpating the pulse.

Another analogy would be the switching on of a light- the finger being the needle, the switch the point, the wire the meridian and the electricity the Qi or energy. The health of these meridians and the organs to which they are connected, is assessed by, taking a full medical history, observing the shape, colour and cracks on the tongue and by palpating the pulse. Pulse diagnosis is fundamental to Acupuncture practice. It is a life long study, requiring great sensitivity to the different qualities that can be felt. Six positions are located on each Radial artery, making up the twelve main meridians of the body.
